While McDonald’s in America seems to be suffering from the popularity of the new generation of fast food, including “fast gourmet” establishments like Shake Shack and Chipotle, it still has a strong foothold around the world. What many Americans might not know is that the franchise changes its menu all over the globe, to cater to local tastes and preferences. Here’s a few of the unusual items on international McDonald’s menus:
Bubur Ayam is a Malaysian version of Chinese chicken congee, a traditional favorite at breakfast time, usually sold by street vendors from carts. It consists of porridge topped with chicken, shallots, ginger and chili. McDonald’s capitalized on its popularity, offering its own version.
The McArabia is basically a chicken burger with a folded pita instead of a hamburger bun, offered in several Arab countries.
Germany is known as the home of the wurst, or sausage. McDonald’s in Germany offers the McCurrywurst, a popular sausage covered in curry sprinkles. In the morning, you can have a breakfast of fresh rolls with Nutella, a sweet European staple.
Accommodating the predominant religion among India’s population of 1.25 billion, Hinduism, there is no meat on the menu at McDonald’s. The McVeggie features spicy vegetables and the Big Spicy Paneer Wrap is a twist on traditional Indian cuisine: deep fried paneer cheese in a tortilla with vegetables.
While there’s no sushi on the Japanese McDonald’s menu, there is a nod to local flavor in the green tea McFlurry, the McTeriyaki burger and the fried shrimp patty burgers.
The McMollete is a downsized version of a popular Mexican breakfast, including refried beans, cheese and salsa.
Georgie Pie was a native New Zealander fast food chain opened in 1977, offering signature “pies.” When it failed financially, the brand was bought by McDonald’s. The chain then incorporated the popular doughy treat into its own menu with fillings like minced steak, chicken/vegetable, and apple/blackberry.
What else would McDonald’s incorporate into its Italian menu, other than pizza? The Pizzarotto, is a dough pocket filled with tomato and mozzarella.
