Your hair is constantly bombarded by the effects of UV rays, wind, moisture and pollutants. Every day, hair gets stripped of its protective natural oils and moisture, which then leads to dryness, lackluster appearance and damage. The trick to keeping your hair healthy and looking good is to pamper it with conditioning protection on a regular basis.

Here are a few DIY hair masks that you can make easily with ingredients found in your local supermarket or pharmacy:

1. Papaya Hair Mask

Great for deep conditioning and enhancing shine.

1/2 ripe papaya, skinned and seeded
1 egg white, beaten
1 tablespoon honey

Use: Mix all of the ingredients in a blender or by hand until smooth. Apply the paste to hair and let sit for 20 minutes. Rinse.

2. Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse

Many commercial hair products de-stabilize your hair’s natural pH balance. This causes hair cuticles to lift, and leaves hair more vulnerable to damage.

3 cups water
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar

Use: Mix water and vinegar and apply to hair.

3. Aloe vera Rinse

Aloe Vera sap also has an acidic pH and is great for moisturizing and protecting hair. If your hair feels excessively dry, refresh it with a spray of aloe vera water.

1 aloe leaf
1 cup filtered or spring water

Use: Cut the aloe into cubes. Infuse in water or blend with water in a blender. Transfer the liquid to a spray bottle and use as necessary.

4. Coconut Oil Mask

Coconut oil will protect hair from damaging sun exposure and lock in moisture.

2 tablespoons coconut oil

Use: Warm the coconut oil by massaging in your hands. Apply generously to hair and leave in as long as possible. Rinse.
