The spring season is the perfect time to do a thorough cleaning of the house. However, if you’re one of the many people trying to live a more natural, toxin-free lifestyle, you might want to try chucking your synthetic, chemical-based commercial cleaning products and using essential oils instead.

1. Lemon essential oil

Thanks to decades of marketing, we associate citrus scent with cleanliness. Lemon essential oil has strong antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral powers. You can use it on the floor, windows and laundry. For mopping the floor, dilute 15 drops of lemon essential oil in a bucket of water, along with one cup of white vinegar and one tablespoon of castille soap.  For windows, mix a few drops of white vinegar with lemon essential oil and wipe away!

2. Orange essential oil

Equally citrus-y and refreshing, orange essential oil works great against grease and grime. Just mix a few drops of oil with baking soda on a damp sponge and hit the stovetop, your favorite pans, or the inside of the microwave.

3. Tea tree oil

Tea tree essential oil is well-known for its antibacterial powers in medicine – it can work just as effectively around the house. Clean mold or mildew-prone areas like the shower and countertops by adding a few drops of oil to two cups of water in a spray bottle.

4. Peppermint essential oil

Use in the same way as tea tree oil.

5. Lavender essential oil

Lavender essential oil, aside from smelling wonderful, boasts antiseptic, antiviral and antifungal powers. You can use a few drops mixed in a solution of one part vinegar, three parts water to clean your floor and surfaces.
